Terrestris Global is seeking a Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC). The Pseudorabies disease surveillance involves the collection and testing of blood and tissue samples from targeted populations of animals. Blood collection and other associated services will be performed in Newbern, Tennessee. The Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC) will work 5 days per week depending on the operation schedule of the plant – work hours typically start at 5:30 am until 2:00-5:00 pm. The operation schedule of the plant may vary from month to month. The Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC) will work a flexible schedule.

What your day consists of:

  • The Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC) will fill a tube provided by the VSTN Area with blood and immediately cap the sample.
  • Tubes will be filled to within 1 inch of the bottom of the tube cap. The tubes will be held at room temperature (65-80 degrees F) until clot forms, which normally requires 1 hour.
  • 5 (2) The blood sample and its corresponding identification, together in a plastic sack, will be delivered or shipped to the designated laboratory. Such shipments require the use of a refrigerant and insulated shipping container.
  • Communicate with AD, Animal Identification Coordinator (AIC), and Area Epidemiology (AEO) on sampling quotas for individual states and collect samples to meet the needs of the individual states.
  • Manage supplies and inventory at the slaughter location necessary to complete blood collection. The collector will contact USDA SPRS D2 AIC (animal identification coordinator) directly to request orders for supplies including PPE, shipping equipment, blood tubes, etc. via phone or email.
  • Complete shipping airway bills and maintain shipping records for samples sent to the laboratory.
  • Coordinate shipping schedules and communication with the laboratory regarding holiday schedules
  • Utilize bar code scanner technology and assist USDA FSIS personnel in the plant with ID retention for FSIS traceability.

Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC) Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in animal science and have at least 2 years of experience in collecting blood in a slaughter facility, animal blood handling, and slaughterhouse operations
  • Be familiar with official identification (ID) programs of various states
  • Have proficient computer skills in order to produce electronic shipping labels for shipping
  • Have Organizational skills/computer skills/understand record-keeping systems
  • Ability to utilize bar code scanner technology
  • Ability to work with other Federal personnel in the plant and assist with traceability efforts.
  • Must be able to work standing on wet, hard, slippery surfaces during the entire work hours in a noisy environment.

Personal Protection Equipment:

Swine Blood Slaughter Collector (SBSC) is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as determined by the plant safety to include but may not be limited to a hard hat, water-resistant rubber boots, gloves, ear protection, coat, etc.
